Empowering the Next Generation: My Experience Volunteering with VT Works for Women

Last Friday, I had the opportunity to volunteer at Green Mountain Technology & Career Center in Hyde Park as part of the VT Works for Women initiative. This was my third time participating in this event, and each experience has been incredibly rewarding. One of the highlights this time around was reconnecting with some of the same girls I had in my group during a previous session. It was amazing to see them return with excitement and curiosity, ready to explore new areas they hadn't had the chance to engage with before.

Encouraging Confidence Through Hands-On Experience

One of the most inspiring aspects of volunteering at this event is watching young women step outside their comfort zones and try things that, even I admit, would have intimidated me at their age. VT Works for Women is dedicated to breaking down barriers and encouraging girls to explore career paths in fields traditionally dominated by men. Seeing them tackle challenges head-on, whether it be welding, woodworking, or engineering, left me feeling incredibly inspired.

Touring the Green Mountain Technology & Career Center

While I was there, I had the chance to take a tour of the tech center and see firsthand the incredible work being done by students. One of the most impressive aspects was their house-building program, where students construct homes similar to those built by Habitat for Humanity. This hands-on approach not only teaches valuable trade skills but also instills a sense of accomplishment and purpose.

Another exciting part of the day was the culinary arts class, where the girls were making pizzas. The energy in the room was infectious, collaborating and honing their cooking skills in a real-world setting. Programs like these provide invaluable experience and open doors to career opportunities that students might not have otherwise considered.

Why Programs Like This Matter

VT Works for Women and similar initiatives play a crucial role in empowering young women to explore fields they may not have traditionally seen themselves in. Exposure to technical and vocational careers at an early age can ignite passions, build confidence, and pave the way for future success. Seeing these young women embrace the opportunity to learn and grow in these hands-on environments reaffirms the importance of programs like this.

Looking Forward to the Next Opportunity

Each time I volunteer, I leave with a renewed sense of hope and inspiration. It’s an incredible experience to witness young women stepping into spaces where they can develop skills, build confidence, and see a future full of possibilities. I look forward to continuing to support VT Works for Women and watching these talented, determined young individuals flourish.

If you’ve ever considered volunteering for an organization like this, I highly encourage you to do so. The impact is truly immeasurable, and you just might find yourself as inspired as I have been!
